Practice activities enable learners to apply their knowledge in a controlled setting where they can receive feedback and continue to modify their actions until they reach the desired goal. This feedback can come in different forms (e.g. tutors, peers, self-reflection, automated feedback on quiz questions).
Whilst it’s a key part of the learning process it can also be the hardest to replicate online – how do you, for instance, conduct field work or lab work from your home computer? The answer is you probably can’t, but whilst some things will be impossible to fully implement online, you may be able to find creative ways to help learners achieve some of the learning outcomes.
Examples:
Lab simulation software (this can be an expensive option)
Synchronous role play (e.g. roleplaying the doctor-patient relationship)
Live Q&A with subject matter experts / practitioners
Reflective practitioner blogs/vlogs
