Setting up CSI summative TBL exams

Setting up CSI summative TBL exams

This page explains the process for setting up CSI summative TBL exams (tasks performed by the Digital Learning Team only).

Note that CSI TBLs may only consist of iRAT and tRAT, and tAPP may form a separate session on its own. The following guide covers the iRAT/tRAT scenario at the start, for tAPP scroll down to the bottom.

Important: once the dates for CSI summative assessments are known, they need to be communicated to ICT with rooms and student numbers, so that ICT can monitor the network on the day.

Contacts (updated June 2023):

  • Raise a ticket with helpdesk
  • Email Nick Jones nick.d.jones@imperial.ac.uk, Tania Bozinovska t.bozinovska@imperial.ac.uk, ICT Tech. Ops Networks Group – Infrastructure ictns-infra-dl@imperial.ac.uk

Questions

  • Receive the final version of the questions from the CSI team.
  • Once questions received and confirmed, follow the process in the videos below. Setting up from mastercopy is quicker and easier than setting up from wizard.
  • Note that prior to starting the process you will need to have the questions ready in the LAMS Word template (to be downloaded from LAMS, e.g. from Question Bank). This takes quite a bit of editing to make sure the format is correct. It is important to make sure there are no unnecessary formatting markers in the document as they may disrupt the import. Issues with importing questions normally have to do with incorrect formatting, unnecessary formatting markers in the Word doc, or images in a wrong format (use png or jpeg).

Settings checklist

This checklist provides a list of adjustments made specifically for CSI summative TBL exams.

Sequence

  • Add a password gate between Introduction and Team Setup, rename as “Password gate”. Passwords for specific lessons are normally provided by CSI staff.
  • Add a permission gate between iRAT and Leader Selection. Rename as “Leader Selection gate”.
  • Some CSI TBL exams only include iRAT and tRAT. In these cases, remove the tAPP.
  • Weighting: leave as is, it’s not used. (Results are downloaded and processed separately.)
  • Peer review is not used.
  • Make sure the title matches the title in Celcat (especially important when adding the lesson to a course)

Introduction

  • Replace the default text with the following (adjusted as needed)

Welcome to your Team Based Learning assessment for Case <insert number>

You should have read the designated reading material after your face-to-face session. You will first complete the Individual Readiness Assurance Test (iRAT). In your groups, you will then allocate a team leader and attempt the Team Readiness Assurance Test (tRAT), where only the leader will submit the group’s answer. Only the leader needs to submit the answers, but all students should access and progress through the tRAT section.

IMPORTANT

On the next page you will be required to enter the passcode to access the assessment. The passcode will be provided by the instructor at the start of the exam.

iRAT

  • Shuffle questions.
  • Shuffle options within questions (this requires editing each question separately). When prompted by a pop-up, click OK to make sure the same changes are transferred to tRAT.

tRAT

  • Shuffle questions.
  • Disable Burning questions.
  • Enable double click for answers.
  • Change default mark allocation to 4,1,-2,-5

tAPP

  • Some sequences don’t require it – remove if this is the case.
  • If tAPP included, adjust mark allocation as per the brief from CSI team.

CSI assessments often use tAPP as a stand-alone assessment (without iRAT or tRAT). If this is the case, the easiest way to set up is to use the following template (saved in the public folder in LAMS): _CSI SUMMATIVE TBL TEMPLATE TAPP

For instructions how to use a template, watch the iRAT/tRAT video above.

Notebook

  • The reflective notebook at the end is used by CSI for gathering individual feedback. Rename to “Feedback”.
  • Replace the default text with the following (adjusted as needed):

Please provide any feedback you have about these two cases, this assessment, or the CSI module in general. (Optional)

This is what a CSI sequence typically looks like (note: this one has no tAPP):

Deploying the lesson

Once the lesson is created in Author, it needs to be added to (deployed in) the relevant course, and the relevant set up needs to be completed. The steps are:

  1. Add lesson under respective course (or sub-course if applicable)
  2. Go to regular monitor for the respective lesson
  3. Click Open selectively on the password gate and change password
  4. Click Go on Team Setup and choose the correct grouping (check if assigned and unassigned learners looks okay)
  5. Click Edit class and check if monitors look okay
