Authoring a LAMS Lesson

Accessing Author Mode

  • Go to LAMS International and click on the Author button in the top right corner.

Using LAMS Templates

  • In the Authoring Window from Step 1, click Open.
  • In the window that appears, navigate to the template, avoiding title clicks. Click Open after selecting the template.
  • Immediately after opening the template, click Save as, and save your lesson with a new name under the Courses folder. Use the down arrow next to Save to access Save as.
  • WARNING: Ensure to save your file before editing to prevent overwriting the template with exam information.

Using the Wizard

  • Click the Down arrow next to New and select Use Learning Design Wizards.
  • The Wizard will guide you through creating a LAMS lesson. Progress until finish, using the progress bar at the top. More information can be found here.

Editing Lesson Sequence

  • Edit the sequence order and components using the flowchart editor. Always verify the start-to-finish transition. Use the transition button to add missing transitions.

Editing Gates

  • Gates control student passage. Two main types are Password gates and Permission gates.
  • Password gates require a preset password for passage.
  • Permission gates open when the lesson monitor allows.

Importing from .docx

  • Double-click the iRAT component.
  • Click Import questions, choose MS Word from the drop-down list, and select an unencrypted MSWord .docx file saved in LAMS format. Follow on-screen instructions to import.

LAMS Format .docx for SBAs

  • Open the document with questions.
  • In a new Word document:
    • Prefix question titles with “Question:”
    • Remove question numbering.
    • Number options as “a),” “b),” “c),” “d).”
    • Answer using ONLY the option number (e.g., “Answer: a”).
    • Remove extra information, yellow boxes, and accidental comments.
    • Add a line break before each question.
    • Finalise the file per the CSI lessons example.
  • Encrypt the file with a standard password and send it to the liaison person in the DEO.

LAMS Format .docx for VSA

  • In a new Word document:
    • Prefix VSAQ question titles with “Question:”
    • Remove question numbering.
    • Provide answers for “Correct:” and “Incorrect:”; include variations.
    • Add a line break before each question.
    • Finalise the file per the example.
  • Encrypt the file with a standard password and send it to the liaison person in the DEO.

Import from Question Bank

  • Toggle the Question bank to search and import questions.
  • Use Advanced search to limit search by collection (folders) or question type.
